Educators need a better teaching support experience

The University of Sydney has relied on a system for 15 years to manage various academic activities for more than 3,000 academic staff. Tasks like curriculum support, learning management, assessment marking, timetabling, and exams were all facilitated by this system. However, the vendor discontinued their services in 2022, prompting the university to urgently seek and adopt a new system due to the known risks associated with the previous vendor.

Challenges we overcame

  • Insufficient documentation of user needs, requirements, and system features.

  • The original poorly designed interfaces hindered team comprehension and navigation.

  • Redefined access management for multiple user groups and roles.

  • Difficulty in importing precise data due to legacy systems across the university.

How I researched

I conducted over 10 interviews with users with varying system knowledge and experience levels. The primary goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the most critical issues in the current user experience. I used the XO(Experience Outcomes) and JTBD frameworks to craft user insights that can inform future design enhancements.

Made sure we designed the solution right

“Thanks all for your sustained work. It's vital for our educators and those who support them. It was smooth, intuitive and a pleasure to use.”
